Myths About VoIP

Myth #1: You will have to get a new phone

You can use any phone you already own or purchase a new one if you want to. VoIP desk phones are connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable. Power over Ethernet empowers workers to be more mobile.

A VoIP system is also available through the use of mobile software on your computer or smartphone. VoIP’s flexibility gives new entrants a chance to compete in the market. VoIP devices are affordable – and can be available at no cost with select plans.

Myth #2: VoIP won’t let you keep the existing number

Transferring your existing phone numbers has been a bit of a mystery to some people. The days of phone companies holding your phone number hostage when you switch carriers are over.

You probably have an existing phone number you don’t want to give up while switching to VoIP. You can use new or existing phone numbers. You can take your assigned number anywhere and access your account no matter what device you are using. Once you have logged into the system, you can make and receive phone calls from personal or company laptops, desktops, or cell phones.

Myth #3: VoIP is hard to set up

Innovations in technology has made it quick and easy to set up a VoIP calling system. As VoIP technology continuously evolves, more and more businesses and consumers are switching over to VOIP over traditional phone lines. Setting up a cloud-based phone system is as easy as downloading an app. Without any technical knowledge, you can manage your phone numbers, call flows, and users.

Despite what you think, there’s some truth to this common myth. Several years ago, businesses needed telecom experts to install and configure their phone system. This often meant bulky PBX equipment and wiring to tether employees to their desks. This is no longer the situation as VoIP provides freedom to use many devices including a cell phone or laptop while on the go. In short, VoIP is easy to install. Just a few simple steps and you’re good to go. And once you have set up the system correctly, you can run all procedures from your phone.

Myth #4: VoIP has low call quality

It’s a common misconception that landline telephone calls are better than VoIP calls. However, with 100 kilobits per second of bandwidth, VoIP calls can sound better than traditional phones.

Many VoIP handsets allow noise-canceling technology to improve the sound quality of calls to a great extent. With high bandwidth, calls on the VoIP will be crystal-clear.

Myth #5: VoIP is only for big businesses

A common misconception is that VoIP is only for big businesses. In reality, small businesses can take advantage of many VoIP benefits.

Statistics reveal that VoIP is one of the most inexpensive methods of phone communication. They can reduce small-medium company’s phone bills by up to 60%. VoIP can save small businesses about 45% off the actual cost over traditional phone services. Companies from virtually every industry use Voice over IP for business communications. They are all around you: car dealerships, home services, bakeries, manufacturing, healthcare, and law firms.

Myth #6: VoIP is not secure

Before switching to VOIP, many businesses ask this one question— Is VoIP secure?

We understand that data security is a primary consideration for IT professionals when switching to any other system. IP telephony is no less secure than a traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Thanks to encryption, VoIP can mitigate risks more effectively than with traditional landlines.

However, VoIP is much more reliable than the traditional telephone service. Servers are regularly monitored and validated to ensure their security. And data security is not limited to giant corporations as small and medium businesses also get special security considerations. VoIP has policies in place to protect every customer’s data.

Myth #7: VoIP is expensive

On the contrary, VoIP requires no new infrastructure or hardware but instead works with the existing internet. Businesses can, therefore, improve communications while saving costs. Compared to analog phone systems, VoIP is a no-brainer. Legacy telecom providers charge extra for business features such as auto attendants, conference calling, and nationwide long-distance. You need a business voicemail? That will be an additional cost every month with a traditional phone service.

Traditional long-distance telephone calling can become very expensive. To maintain the quality of a connection, more circuits have to be open for a call duration, which increases the price for traditional phones. VoIP can be used worldwide.

Myth #8: VoIP is not reliable

VoIP is reliable. We agree the introduction of wireless technology can be confusing. Remember when we were all skeptical of wireless internet and cell phones? VoIP technology has been around for over 25 years. Communication apps you are already familiar with, such as Skype and WhatsApp, use VoIP technology for audio and video calls.

Landlines are prone to outages due to natural disasters, power outages, etc. It’s common for the phone company to not restore service quickly. Conversely, with a reliable internet connection, it is safe to use VoIP. Even if you face a power outage and your Internet goes down, you can forward phone calls to your laptop or cell phone until the connection is re-established.

Once you switch from traditional phone service to VoIP, you may never want to go back.
